Netherlands Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende yesterday showed a model of the Dutch Pavilion for World Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

The Dutch Pavilion design, known as “Happy Street,” is mainly composed of a pedestrian strip shaped like the number “8,” a lucky number in China that suggests fortune.

26 small houses will be elevated along the main pedestrian strip. The houses will present exhibitions exploring themes such as energy, water, space and many other urban issues.

The pavilion is expected to attract more than 7 million visitors, Balkenende said.

The Netherlands pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010 will be great!

  1. I am eager to see bicycle transportation included in the Expo offerings. I see that “Apple Travel” magazine reports that the Expo will have a bike-sharing program in use. I would like assurance that Expo will actually provide this program, but I have failed to reach any Expo organizer.

I also would like to see some kind of Expo pedicab service. Expo could refurbish a fleet of Shanghai’s local tricycle-trucks. Painted or bought new, these vehicles could be decorated with Chinese motifs and the drivers could be clothed in matching outfits. I believe that visitors would be enchanted. While these vehicles circulate about the Expo site they not only would serve to carry visitors, but they would also serve as a mobile emblem of the Expo’s “green” policy.
